Chemvet Newsletter Volume 55: Winter 2024

Dear Clients,

Early May was extremely busy for Chemvet with attendance at both AGFEST in Tassie and BEEF 2024 at Rockhampton. It was fantastic to catch up with so many clients (some 20 years plus) and potentially new ones at both events.

BEEF 2024 was HUGE! There was so much to see and hear on everything Beef; from breed displays and judging through to a large display area totally dedicated to tech and carbon solutions – and everything in between. On the animal health front, ticks and flies were the major area of discussion and it was great to be able to offer a full range of solutions to the many who stopped and chatted each day. I was really impressed that many wanted to discuss the best ways to use the products rather than the chemicals themselves. For example, with ticks, our two flagship long-acting products’, ‘Vetmec LA for Cattle’ and ‘Tickmaster Plus’, both have an enormous role to play as a spring application knocking over the ‘over-wintered’ first generation of ticks, thus massively reducing the tick burden on the property over the ensuing summer and autumn periods.

Down South, Vetmec LA (with a Vetmec LEV ‘primer’), has certainly found a niche in controlling worms in young cattle with a single application over the wet, cold winter months.

On the tag front, we have an incredible competition going with any electronic tag purchase up to the 31st July going in the draw to win a Tru-Test XRS2i Stick Reader valued at $2400 (more on the back page).

Weather-wise, we recognize how tough it has suddenly become for all our clients in the West, SA, Victoria (especially the western district and the NE) and Tasmania, and we are hoping for the much-needed rains before we get too far into the winter. Just a note of caution, remember, even though it is terribly dry, to keep those strategic pre-lambing and pre-calving and overwinter weaner treatments going. It will rain soon and stock doing it tough and grazing close to the ground, will be ideal targets for those pesky parasites!

Kind regards,
Murray

Tickmaster Plus – Pre Order

Off the back of such a big tick season over 2023 – 2024, it’s inevitable that there will be higher than usual numbers of dormant ticks overwintering in the environment. So, we’re going to start the ball rolling in hammering home the importance of treating early next season (August/September 2024). The timing of the first treatment is going to be VITAL for killing off the first generation of emerging ticks, and ensuring Cattle Tick populations remain manageable.

After selling out of Tickmaster Plus last year, we are giving everyone the option to pre-order and secure their Tickmaster Plus, with expected dispatch in mid-late July. To help us get organised, we are offering a bonus pour-on applicator to everyone that orders more than 2 x 15L drums before 31st July 2024.

Merits of Vetmec LA

It has been just over a year since the launch of Vetmec LA which we think has gone very quickly. The product has already been sent all over the country for strategic use against many different parasites, including gastrointestinal worms, sucking lice and Cattle Tick.

Weaner cattle do not develop natural immunity to worms until 20-24 months of age. Stress factors including nutrition access and weaning can further affect their immunity and make weaners more susceptible to the effect of parasite infection. Using VETMEC LA provides your weaners a greater period of protection throughout winter whilst acting to clean up any contaminated pastures. Protect your cattle against worms for up to 120 days, sucking lice for 133 days and cattle tick for at least 51 days, and stop the yards from bogging up over winter!

A Note on Resistance

It’d be safe for us to assume that if you’re a cattle farmer then you’ve no doubt heard the word ‘resistance’ thrown around the traps. But what is it? When we use the term “resistance”, it means that a group of parasites (worms, lice, ticks & flies abroad) have gained the genetic ability to survive a round of drenching, creating a worm population that will be unaffected by certain chemical group(s) found in your drenches.

So how can resistance be prevented?
The solution = Multi-active drenches!

By using VETMEC LEV in conjunction with any of our injectable cattle products, or even our VETMEC POUR ON, the chance of any on-farm worm populations developing resistance is significantly reduced. The multi-active strategy also works as an excellent quarantine drench for any new cattle brought onto the farm.

Oral Drench Sale!

To encourage the maintenance of a good sheep parasite management regime in the face of softer wool and meat prices, we’re offering the opportunity to save on our Vetmec LV plus Selenium and Vetmec Dual oral sheep drenches.

To get the best results and avoid the development of worm resistance, we recommend combining the two together.

It is a very easy process of mixing each drench at 1L : 1L into the drenching backpack, and then doubling the dose rate (from 1mL to 2mL / 10kg) so the sheep are, in effect, getting a dose of each drench. If you have any more questions about the strategic use of these drenches, give the team a call on 1800 243 683.

“It’s much harder to drench a paddock than to drench a sheep!”

Pasture management is a key practice to keep in mind for your animal health program, particularly for high-risk animals like pregnant ewes & weaners. Once paddocks are contaminated with worm eggs & larvae, it is difficult to get things back under control with mild summers and/or winters. Rotational grazing using graze & rest periods can prevent reinfection. Shortening graze periods to 4-10 days and resting paddocks for 40-80 days (depending on temperature) can give enough time for many of the larvae to die off and keep your flock clean. If it isn’t achievable for you to keep lactating ewes or weaners off contaminated pastures, consider using Vetmec Moxiguard Long-Acting Injection for Sheep! Josh, Tash & Murray are always up for a chat about management practices & drench programs.

As Murray mentioned on the front page, we also made the trek up north to exhibit in Rockhampton for the much anticipated “BEEF WEEK”.

We are looking forward to seeing many more of you throughout
the rest of the year! Don’t be a stranger if we are in your area:
